The Lakers were led by LeBron James, who had 33 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists. Anthony Davis added 27 points and 10 rebounds.
The Lakers trailed by 21 points in the second half, but they cut the deficit to six points with less than two minutes remaining.
However, the Nuggets made their free throws down the stretch to secure the victory.
Game 2 of the series will be played on Monday night in Denver.
